Xinhua news agency, Beijing, May 31, American researchers developed a new technology that can correct vision by adjusting the shape of the cornea by low energy laser. It does not damage cells and tissues. It has small side effects and is widely used in the population.
Columbia University recently released a press communique that the new technology has achieved good results in preliminary trials, and is expected to be applied to myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism, etc.
At present, a common operation for correction of vision is to burn cornea by laser, and to change the diopter of cornea by "grinding". Because of trauma, the operation may cause sequelae and there are many limitations to the applicable population.
The new study is the first laser correction of corneal diopter using laser induced photochemical reactions. The laser energy is low, it will not produce burning effect, but it can cause a series of reactions inside the cornea, promote the cross-linking of collagen fibers, change the mechanical properties of the corresponding parts, and then influence the overall structure of the cornea.
Related papers were published in the new issue of British Journal of nature photonics. The researchers plan to conduct clinical trials within the year and optimize algorithms to accurately predict the degree of laser induced corneal deformation, so as to facilitate personalized treatment.
