Recently, a Chinese Academy of Sciences team of researchers from the Shanghai Institute of Microsystems and Information Technology has made a breakthrough in the fabrication of lithium tantalate heterogenous integrated wafers and high-performance photonic chips, they have exploited lithium tantalate's advantages over lithium niobate in optoelectronic performance and batch fabrication, and have developed new“Optical silicon” chips that can be manufactured in bulk, the findings were 2024 May 8 in the journal Nature. 

         To the best of our knowledge, the lithium tantalate photonic chip exhibits very low optical loss and high efficiency electro-optic conversion, it is expected to provide solutions to the speed, power, frequency and bandwidth bottlenecks in the field of communication, and to spawn revolutionary technologies in the fields of low-temperature quantum, optical computing and optical communication.
